My chair was built in 1999. It is my home office chair and I am in it every day from 8 to 18 hours. This chair is phenomenal! After 12 years, except for a worn arm pad, it still works like new. There is hardly a squeak and all movement is smooth. I love it and I definitely recommend it to everyone!

Comments about Steelcase Criterion - High Back:

In the mid 1990's, my former company bought these chairs for all employees in my department. I recently called one of the employees to see if the chairs were still in use in order to get the model number. They are and I ordered one for my office.

Not only are these chairs workhorses, they are very comfortable, attractive and can be adjusted to fit almost anyone. I couldn't be happier with my new one.

I have a Leap chair which I love but it was never big enough for my 6'4'' frame. This chair fits me perfectly and is is very comfortable however not as attractive or adjustable as the Leap. Would love a Leap Plus ... but this is the next best thing. I bought this particular chair because I have just like it at my desk at work. I have just started to work from home, and I knew that I needed a good sturdy and comfortable chair to handle my big frame. (6'0")(300+ lbs.) This chair has adjustments for all positions so as to achieve the best level of support and comfort. I know from using this same type of chair for several years, that the material, hydraulics, and finish hold up very well from everyday use.

Hi Minou, It all comes down to preference. The high-back chair is for those that like the feel of a full back seating. Both versions are extremely comfortable for full day use. Personally, I do enjoy leaning back in a chair at times during the day, and that is when a high back chair is really most comfortable. But again, that is a matter of preference.

If you bring your chair into an authorized Steelcase dealership in your area, they will definitely be able to assist you in re-upholstering your Criterion chair for even longer extended longevity. You can, however, bring your chair into any authorized Steelcase dealership in your area to have them repair or replace the upholstery and bring more longevity to your Criterion chair. • Q:

I have had my Steelcase Criterion High Back chair for about 10 years now and it has served my needs (I'm 6' 1"@ 300lbs) well with many years of sitting comfort and support. I'm not sure why but of late I have noticed that my back is stiff after sitting 30 minutes or more. Not sure if my age (ie. 59) is a factor or whether the material in the seat cushion has compressed to the point that it no longer provides the needed comfort/support to prevent such stiffness. Any recommended solutions (ex. being about to procure a new seat cushion to replace the current one) greatly appreciated.

Glad to hear your chair has served you well for so many years. My recommendation would be to bring the chair to an authorized Steelcase dealer near you and see if they could install a new replacement cushion. If you are interested in a new chair, we would be happy to assist giving you some recommendations. We have a variety of high-back chairs, as well as our Leap Plus series which is designed for customers with needs such as yours.
